B&A: 90s Primary Bathroom Gets a Warm Neutral Shiplap Makeover… Twice
BEFORE & AFTER
VIA HAMBELS GET REAL
This beautiful, warm neutral, shiplap primary bathroom is the result of Joannie of Hambels Get Real and her husband Mike’s very hard work. The project was completed in three stages—a “before, after, and after again,” if you will.
The original “after” is from back in 2019, when Joannie and Mike remodeled their 90s style, tuscan-meets-chrome primary bathroom. The second “after” was a result of a fire sprinkler bursting in the bathroom and flooding the downstairs of their home, forcing Joannie and Mike to do much of their work over again, along with a few changes and upgrades.
In the first remodel, Joannie and Mike added all the wonderful vertical shiplap paneling to the walls, and demoed and tiled the floor with a ceramic faux marble. They upgraded the shower quite a bit, including enlarging it by 18″, and building in two benches on either side. Joannie built the vanities and linen cabinet, and trimmed the alcove bath archway, and Mike added several can lights and swapped the overhead vanity lights for sconces.

Then, three years later, the sprinkler burst. Unfortunately, the shiplap absorbed the water so quickly that much of it had to be removed. Only the pieces that didn’t touch the floor could be salvaged. In the middle photo above, you can see all the fans working to dry the water, and how much shiplap had to be re-done. The photo on the right shows the amazing post-repairs shower.

Since the sprinkler that burst was in the enclosed toilet area, this room took the most damage, and basically everything there had to be ripped out. Although unfortunate, it did give them the opportunity to add shiplap in this area while they were replacing the damaged shiplap in the vanity and shower area. The paneling painted dark looks incredible and adds some very cool contrast.

The changes they made to the tub in the original remodel were incredible, especially the paneling addition. Luckily, this area didn’t need as much work after the flood. The switch to white paint on this wall after the flood looks great.

Although it took QUITE a lot of work to reach this point, the finished bathroom is stunning. It’s of note that instead of renovating with the latest tile or paint color trend, Joannie and Mike stuck with their original design. Clearly their taste is both impeccable and consistent.
