Plain white ceilings are the standard for a reason. White is simple, clean, and doesn’t clash with anything.

However, white ceilings are not the only option. In fact, there are a plethora of ways you can style your ceiling to create an incredibly unique impact in a space. A coat of paint or a fun wallpaper on the ceiling creates visual interest, adds character, and can make a room feel really special.

Below are some amazing ORC projects that utilize the “5th wall” in intriguing ways you’ll want to consider for your next project.

In this glamorous dining room, Jewel Marlowe carried the beautiful pink gloss paint from the walls onto the ceiling. Using the same color creates a seamless transition from wall to ceiling that makes a space feel very immersive and adds a bit of drama. The key to this technique is choosing a color that won’t feel overwhelming, like this lovely, airy pink.

This lovely living room by Farm Fresh Curls has a coffered ceiling, which is a classic architectural element. It elevates the space and makes it feel much larger, and it adds a touch of visual interest while staying true to the more traditional vibe of the space.

A children's bedroom is definitely a great place to do something adventurous and whimsical like adding wallpaper to the ceiling. This sweet boy’s room is by The Southern Gail. The starry wallpaper she chose adds a splash of fun, and the white background keeps it from feeling too heavy in such a light and delicate space.

Minimalists, you can get in on styled ceilings, too. Whitney of Achillea Design Co used these boards to cover up popcorn ceilings. It elevates the space so much without adding anything flashy that’ll detract from the minimalist, natural vibe of the room.

In this ultra moody, gorgeous living area, Erin of Apartment 34 painted the walls and ceiling a matching matte dark gray. It gives the space so much drama and flair, and also makes it feel so intimate. It especially works in this space due to the high ceiling and high windows balancing the dark paint.

This, by Hommeboys, is the epitome of a bold and creative ceiling. Bringing in texture on basically every other surface of the room helps to balance such an eye-catching pattern on the ceiling. If you’re adventurous enough, something this bold can have a huge payoff!
