B&A: From Unfinished Basement to Perfect, Peaceful Yoga + Exercise Room

BEFORE & AFTER

When Shawna and her husband purchased their house a decade ago, they had planned to turn the unfinished basement into a playroom, but the arrival of their third child put the project on the backburner. 10 years later, with older children and more free time, Shawna registered for the fall ‘23 ORC event, determined to finally create the exercise + yoga + meditation room of her dreams.

Her vision was an open, bright space with neutral tones and a touch of lavender.

Before we get into the Bs and the As, we simply have to take a moment to appreciate the during.

Leading up to the ORC start date, Shawna worked on getting all of the framing and electrical work completed and the necessary inspections passed so that she wouldn’t have to stress about delays once the event began (genius move).

With inspections passed and event underway, it was off to the races. Shawna and her husband accomplished a truly herculean amount of DIY work, including strapping and drywalling the ceiling, drywalling the walls, framing the bulkhead and adding pillars to conceal the ductwork, building divider walls, installing LVP, adding molding, framing out the window, priming, and painting. That’s completely nuts!

The words “basement” and “light & airy” might seem to be in opposition, but this is most certainly one light & airy basement. Shawna was working with a very limited amount of natural light, so the pale, subtle flooring was an excellent choice here to keep the space feeling weightless throughout the day.

The wallpaper mural she added to the window wall was the perfect choice for adding a bit of visual interest and flair without taking away from the airiness of the space.

This space is quite the accomplishment AND a beaut. We know Shawna has lots of excellent meditation and yoga to look forward in her new room—we feel more zen just from looking at photos.
