B&A: Gorgeous Home Office Made Completely DIY

BEFORE & AFTER

Janelle of Nail Gun Nelly created this absolutely incredible home office space during the fall ‘22 ORC.

Her sun room was in need of a subfloor repair and other repairs, so she had yet to decorate it and make it her own. During the 8 weeks of the ORC she tackled all the repairs, as well as a multitude of DIY projects to bring the room to life. The finished product is stunning and so impressive.

The first week of her project was all about demo and planning. She removed multiple layers of flooring and tore out the old fireplace.

Next on the list was the faux beams, which add so much warmth and character to the space. She has a video where she explains this process here.

After a quick vacay to Kauai, she was right back at it removing the entire back wall of the sunroom and replacing the sliding glass door to a high efficiency door (pictured below).

After the windows were done, she was able to tackle laying down the new floor.

Another major project was the fireplace. She tore out the entire pop out and patched it back up to make the main wall completely flat, which created the extra space between the steps where she put her new desk— which, you guessed it, she built herself. Next she installed the flue for the pot belly stove and covered the top portion with wood slats. The finishing touch on that wall was the textured plaster feature.

On either side of the fireplace is yet another one of her projects— turning the doorways into arches. This is such a great. subtle architectural detail that adds so much to the room.

The true stars of the room are the two beautiful green built-in bookcases. These were created starting with two pre-fab cabinets each, which she put on bases she built specifically to give them the built-in look. Then, she added the beautiful slab counters, and built custom bookshelves all the way up to the ceiling. Last but not least, she painted them a beautiful green.

Once all these (extremely numerous) DIY projects were complete, all that was left was to install lighting, hang curtains, bring in the rug and furniture, and fill the bookshelves.

The color palette of browns, neutrals, and greens is so cool. Bringing the outside in with such natural colors and wood accents works perfectly in a sunroom space, which already feels more connected to the outdoors than the rest of a house. This workspace is truly an oasis!
