B&A: Neutral Eclectic Entry and Living Room

BEFORE & AFTER

This stunning living & entry transformation is by Tim of Design Maze from the fall ‘22 ORC!

Tim’s project had an extra special, very sweet twist: this living room and foyer are in his family home, and he would be transforming them secretly as a surprise for his father while his father was out of the country on vacation.

His goal for the living room space was to create a light, bright, welcoming space perfect for both entertaining guests and everyday living. The aesthetic concept was “classic elegance with an edgy twist.” His jumping off point was bringing in the fireplace mantel, which he found on Facebook Marketplace. Then, the popcorn ceiling got scraped and the walls got painted a soft white.

Tim is really a master at mixing styles and pairing items. At first glance, the space looks soothing and elegant, and on second glance all the incredible details start to shine.

According to Tim, one of the tricks of mixing furniture pieces (e.g. pairing a sofa with different chairs rather than buying a matching set) is choosing pieces that have a similar leg profile. The sofa and the pair of chairs he found all have tapered legs in dark walnut finish. They look cohesive and harmonious, but also collected. That takes quite an eye!

Here’s the foyer, the other part of Tim’s surprise project.

The existing limestone tiles and molding were already gorgeous, but it was missing texture. The vintage checkered IKEA rug and grasscloth wallpaper solve that problem brilliantly.

He also gave the front door a coat of beautiful blue paint, which makes the entry feel so much more cheery.

The pieces Tim chose for the entryway are again cohesive and neutral enough to not affect the very calm, warm vibe of the space, but are also each so unique and interesting that the space feels rich and full of life.

Can you imagine coming home from a trip to a foyer and living room THIS stunning? The finished spaces feel so elegant, homey, and welcoming. All the layers of texture and the mix of traditional and modern elements are absolutely incredible.
